Cyclist, 52, dies after colliding with hire car

Lakeram Sarjoo, 52, a pedal cyclist of Cumberland, East Canje Berbice is now dead after he reportedly collided with a hire car (HD 628) along the Canje Public Road on Friday.

Police Headquarters in a statement said the accident occurred at about 08:10hrs.

The driver of the hire car, a 47-year-old man of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

According to reports, the hire car was proceeding north along the western side of the road, while Sarjoo was allegedly speeding in the opposite direction.

Police said Sarjoo collided with the front portion of the car and as a result he fell on the road and received injuries about his body.

He was picked up by the driver of the car in a semi-conscious condition and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. He was admitted with a fractured jaw and right leg and subsequently died while receiving treatment.

Police said a breath alcohol test was conducted on the driver of the car which showed no signs of alcohol.
