Essequibo man held with “towa-towa” birds in hair curlers at CJIA

An Essequibo man’s attempt at landing a big pay day by illegally transporting pricy singing birds to the US has landed him being bars.

The man, Dhanraj Deochand, of Perseverance, Essequibo was arrested at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Wednesday as he attempted to take six finches out of Guyana stashed in hair curlers.

Deochand was immediately arrested.

There have been a number of attempts to ferry the birds out of Guyana. In many cases, the “bird traffickers” would be arrested in the US.

The birds would sell for as much as US$10,000 in New York where there are regular whistling competitions.
