As Guyana undergoes a period of transformation and development, the government is now considering whether to build a new highway from New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek in Region Six.
President Dr Irfaan Ali on Saturday during a diaspora engagement in Orlando, Florida said he recently held a conversation with Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on “whether we should go ahead with the plans to widen the existing New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek road or we should just bite the bullet and go with a brand-new highway now [and] open up new lands from New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek.”
President Ali did not provide any other details.
In April of this year, the Head of State alluded to a massive road expansion plan, expected by 2025, that will support ongoing urban development and the establishment of Guyana’s new city- Silica City.
These road projects are expected to relieve some of the traffic congestion woes faced by commuters. He further explained that an expanded road network is part of the government’s urban development plan.
Four-lane highways are expected to be established at several areas in Regions Three, Four and Six.
On the East Coast, expanded roads are expected to provide easy access to forthcoming industrial development at La Bonne Intention (LBI) and Foulis.
Recently, the contracts for the construction of the $11.8 billion four-lane highway from Schoonord, West Bank Demerara to Crane, West Coast Demerara were signed.
Meanwhile, during the engagement with the diaspora on Saturday President Ali spoke of his government’s vision for the development of Guyana and called for synergy between all Guyanese in achieving progression.
He reiterated his ‘One Guyana’ agenda and deliberated on its virtues of togetherness and cooperation.
The Head of State also underscored the transformation process, explaining in detail its positivity across the country, while inviting his compatriots to return to Guyana to benefit from its developmental opportunities.
“We are building a Guyana in which every single Guyanese will enjoy the fruit of our labour,” President Ali said.
