Moore and John shine at Powerlifting Novices/Juniors Championship

Matthew Moore and Joshua John were crowned the Best Lifters at the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) Novices/Juniors Championship.

Held at the Saint Stanislaus College Auditorium, the event also saw impressive performances from female lifters Jasmaine Assanah and Tisha McCalmon, who set eight new records across all lifts and totals.

Moore took the Junior Classic Best Lifter award, while John secured the Novice Classic title.

Both athletes, along with record-breaking female lifters Assanah and McCalmon, and equipped athlete Kamal Gurdin, received gift vouchers from championship sponsor Fitness Express.

GAPLF President Franklin Wilson thanked the athletes, officials, and sponsors for their contributions to the event’s success.

He also acknowledged the work of past presidents Peter Green, Ed Caesar, and Gordon Spencer.

The competition saw strong performances across the board, with highlights including:

Jasmaine Assanah: Set new records in the 57kg Women’s Junior and Open Raw categories with a total of 290.0kg (Squat 112.5kg, Benchpress 37.5kg, Deadlift 140.0kg).
Tisha McCalmon: Set new records in the 84+kg Women’s Open and Master 1 Raw categories with a total of 295.0kg (Squat 100.0kg, Benchpress 40.0kg, Deadlift 155.0kg).
Jermaine Kendall: Won the 74kg Men’s Open Raw category with a total of 490.0kg.
Satyanand Narine: Won the 83kg Men’s Open Raw category with a total of 495.0kg.
Joshua John: Won the 93kg Men’s Open Raw category and Best Novice Lifter with a total of 570.0kg.

The GAPLF’s next event will be its Annual General Meeting and elections, with a date to be announced soon.
