Injured robbery suspect escapes from police

An injured robbery suspect managed to evade police officers on Monday night in Alberttown, Georgetown, after a hostile crowd hindered the officers from nabbing the man.

Police Headquarters stated that officers were in the Sussex and Cooper Streets area in search of a suspect involved in the GTT Giftland Mall robbery when they received information of an alleged shooting incident in Cooper Street, Albouystown.

The officers, who were on foot heading south on Cooper Street, observed three men matching the description of the suspects in the alleged shooting incident walking towards their direction.

On seeing the officers, one of the suspects reportedly pulled out a black metal object suspected to be a firearm from his pants waist and discharged a round in the direction of the ranks.

The officers immediately took cover and returned fire, hitting the suspect to his left thigh.

After the suspect fell on the ground, the officers managed to retrieve the pistol with two matching rounds of ammunition.

When they attempted to escort the injured suspect to seek medical attention, however, several people in the neighbourhood surrounded the officers, acting in a hostile manner.

It was reported that they pelted the officers with bricks and bottles.

During the ensuing commotion, the suspect managed to flee the scene.

Checks were made at all of the hospitals around Georgetown and based on information received, the injured suspect went to the Georgetown Public Hospital but left before being treated.

Further investigations are in progress.
