DPP discontinues private Cyber Crime charge filed against Crime Chief

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Senior Counsel Shalimar Ali-Hack has stepped in and discontinued the private cyber crime charge that was filed against Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum over statements he made at a press conference against Police Detective Dion Bascom.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the DPP’s decision was conveyed to the Chief Magistrate in a missive dispatched to the Court today.

According to the Police, the lawyers for the Crime Chief contended that the private charge is an abuse of the Court’s process and is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate the Crime Chief Mr. Blanhum as well as senior police officers who are expected to testify in the matter against Police Detective Dion Bascom.

The Police Detective was slapped with three Cyber Crime charges this week over statements he made via his social media page when he announced that there was a cover-up of the Police investigation of biker Ricardo Fagundes.

Two senior Police Officers filed a criminal complaint against the Detective after they were allegedly named as being part of the alleged cover-up.

The Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had responded to some of the claims made by the Police Detective at a press conference that was covered by a number of media houses.
