Female pedestrian, 15, survives serious accident at Grove, lorry driver arrested

A 15-year-old female pedestrian is in stable but serious condition after being struck by a motor lorry in Grove, East Bank Demerara, earlier Wednesday.

The incident, which was captured on a viral video, has drawn widespread attention, and the driver of the lorry has been arrested.

The accident occurred around 9:20 hrs at the junction of the Grove Public Road and the Kaneville/Samatta Point access road.

The motor lorry, identified as #GXX 1162, was driven by a 42-year-old male when it collided with the young pedestrian.

According to eyewitness reports and an investigation, the lorry was moving southbound in heavy traffic.

As the lorry approached the Jimbo Bridge junction, the driver stopped behind another vehicle. When the vehicle in front moved off, the driver of #GXX 1162 began to drive forward.

At that moment, the 15-year-old, who was standing on the eastern side of the road, attempted to cross from east to west in front of the lorry. The left side of the vehicle struck her, causing her to fall underneath the lorry.

Bystanders rushed to assist the injured pedestrian, pulling her from beneath the vehicle.

Emergency medical services were promptly called to the scene, and she was transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Center.

After initial examination, she was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further treatment, where emergency surgery was performed on her hip.

She remains hospitalized with a hip fracture and other injuries, though her condition is described as serious but stable.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the lorry driver showed no signs of alcohol consumption.

He was taken into custody by the Grove Police Station for further questioning. The vehicle was also impounded for examination by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
